The Community & Civic Engagement Micro-Credentials include the Conscientious Community Member Micro-Credential and the Active Citizen Micro-Credential.
These micro-credentials will help students become active citizens working toward positive social change in our ever-changing world. Through various educational opportunities, students will develop a strong foundation of knowledge that will prepare them to be leaders in our local, national, and global communities.
Students will turn their knowledge into action through various service-learning experiences in the local community that will connect theory to practice. This certificate seeks to provide students with the knowledge, hands-on experience, and critical thinking skills needed to be active citizens during their time at UB and beyond.
Undergraduate and graduate students are eligible for both micro-credentials, which can be completed in any order.
We require a 2.0 minimum GPA for students looking to join these micro-credentials to ensure that they are in good academic standing before including additional responsibilities to their plate. Participation is meant to enhance the student experience and provide opportunities for further engagement.
Our Conscientious Community Member Micro-Credential is open to undergraduate and graduate students of any major and is presented as a not-for-credit and hybrid learning experience.

You will be able to explore your passions and connect them to relevant community issues while practicing critical thinking, problem-solving, and interpersonal skills.

The first step in obtaining the Conscientious Community Member Micro-Credential is enrolling in the micro-credential on UBLinked.
To complete the requirements for this micro-credential, you must complete the Education & Exploration and Service requirements below.
Attend one (1) activity/event and two (2) educational workshops from the options listed below. More information about these events, including dates, times, and locations, can be found on UBLinked.

To complete the reflection portion of this micro-credential, you will need to submit the following information on UBLinked:
Reflection papers should be 2 pages, double-spaced with 12 pt. Times New Roman font. You may propose an alternate reflection format if you do not wish to complete a paper, but you will need approval by Community & Civic Engagement staff. You can schedule a meeting with them on Navigate to discuss alternative options.

In addition to the requirements in Step 3, you will need to complete a research paper (4 pages, double-spaced with 12 pt. Times New Roman font) contributing to discourse and understanding around a community/social issue of your choice. The reflection paper will be public-facing.
The final step to complete this micro-credential is submitting our completion form to let us know that you have completed all of the required components. Our team will review this form and the supporting documents from your reflection submission and will confirm your completion via email.

Our Active Citizen Digital Badge is one of the digital badges in the Community & Civic Engagement Micro-Credential. This digital badge is open to undergraduate and graduate students of any major and is presented as a not-for-credit and hybrid learning experience.
This micro-credential emphasizes prioritizing community involvement and inspiring others to take action for collective causes. You will volunteer with a community organization that aligns with your passions and interests, exploring civic issues and root causes while developing critical life skills like problem-solving and interpersonal relations. Culminating in a reflection on your services and educational experience, you will gain insight for academic and professional growth while engaging in meaningful change.

The first step in obtaining the Active Citizen Digital Badge is enrolling in this dgital badge on UBLinked.
After enrolling in this micro-credential, you will complete a service project following the guidelines below and track your service on UBLinked.
In addition to the requirements in Step 2, you will be asked to submit a film for the Social Justice Film Festival or complete a poster presentation to be presented at Community Day (fall) or Pride & Service Day (spring). The poster presentation and reflection will be public-facing.
