The department’s animating mission continues to be the production and dissemination of significant mathematics research having a recognized impact on the development of both fundamental and applied mathematics.

Additional priorities include:

  • Fostering interactions with other units in the university, both in research collaborations and educational programs;
  • The development and delivery of high-quality programs for students at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, programs that prepare them for a variety of mathematically grounded careers;
  • The development and delivery of content rich, appropriately targeted lower-division courses to provide a solid mathematical underpinning for the work of students in other disciplines, principally engineering, management and the sciences.
