We are a mid-sized department offering courses in most of the subfields of philosophy, Students seeking an advanced graduate degree in philosophy will find rich course offerings, opportunities for research, and (unusually in the philosophical world) openings to well-paying careers in government and industry. An undergraduate major in philosophy prepares a student for a wide variety of further academic and professional endeavors; it provides training in argument, and in the creation of powerful persuasive prose.
The department is distinguished by its unusually wide range of special interests and orientations in philosophy, and by the high degree of faculty-student interaction both in scholarly enterprises and in departmental affairs. We have also been extremely active and successful in securing third-party funding and since the year 2000 over $ 16 million dollars have been awarded for research projects on topics such as corona virus ontology, space event classification, and the psychology of religious belief.
