Melissa McCarron was awarded a SUNY IITG grant to develop a mobile app with AI conversation support for culturally competent communication in Spanish across health professions, “Promoting culturally competent communication in Spanish across healthcare professions: A mobile application utilizing AI conversational tools”.
This project represents an opportunity to show how AI can be harnessed in an ethical, culturally proficient way to prepare current and future healthcare providers to effectively navigate social and structural determinants of health that most affect speakers of Spanish with limited English proficiency. McCarron will be leading an interdisciplinary team from UB School of Social Work (Maria Rodriguez, PhD, faculty, and Steve Sturman, Instructional Technologist), UB School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences (Christ-Ange Katche Cellino, PharmD) and healthcare faculty and providers from SUNY Brockport and SUNY Upstate Medical.
