New Program Development

UB has an extensive portfolio of study abroad programs, yet we continue to develop new programs abroad to accommodate the needs of students.

Faculty-Led Study Abroad Programs

Education abroad not only benefits students but also contributes to the internationalization of the UB campus. An increasing number of students come to UB looking to include study abroad as part of their university education. UB faculty play a crucial role in promoting study abroad by encouraging students to explore opportunities, assisting with the development of semester exchange programs, and leading short-term study abroad programs.

Creating A New Program Abroad

Overseas academic programs at the University at Buffalo are facilitated and administered by UB Education Abroad, which is part of the Office of International Education. Proposals for faculty-led study abroad programs should originate with faculty and carry the endorsement of the department chair.

Faculty interested in proposing a new study abroad program should meet with Adam Rubin, Assistant Vice Provost and Director of Education Abroad in the Office of Study Abroad Programs to discuss the intended proposal and timeline. Formal submission of a program proposal is required by completing the Study Abroad Program Proposal Form below. Program proposals should be submitted as far in advance as possible; preferably no later than two full semesters before the program would begin (e.g. a summer program proposal should be submitted by August of the previous year).

Key Questions

  • Will the program be attractive to a broad range of students?
  • Will the program location be attractive to UB students?
  • Does UB already offer similar programs (academic content / location)?
  • Is this a program that you or a colleague would be willing to offer every year or every other year?
  • What are the potential challenges or risks associated with developing this program?
