Education:

  • PhD, Computer Science, University of California, Los Angeles, 2013

Professional experience:

What mentoring means to me:

Mentoring is a reciprocal process of sharing and learning. We impart our knowledge to others while also gaining insights from their learning journeys. In this way, we all grow together.

Topics I am willing to discuss with students:

Academic Culture

  • Considering a non-academic path after grad school.
  • Decoding and demystifying academic culture and norms.
  • Taking a non-traditional path to grad school.

Wenyao adds: Like any field, academia has its own set of rules and conventions. While they may not always align with common sense, these guidelines are designed to be reasonable and contribute to the long-term sustainability of the academic community.

Personal Experiences

  • Caregiving for children.
  • Experiences related to physical health and/or abilities.
  • Non-U.S. citizen or immigrant experiences.

Wenyao adds: No matter how resilient or self-sufficient someone may appear, we all have moments where we need help and support. Don't hesitate to seek assistance. Asking for help doesn't make you weak, it actually empowers you and shows your strength and courage.
