To invite a J-1 Student Intern, please review the following information.
To request a DS-2019 for a J-1 Student Intern, you must submit all of the following forms to International Student Services. We prefer that the application materials be sent to us either via email (iss@buffalo.edu) or using UBox (shared with kkolpack@buffalo.edu).
Once a complete and accurate application is received by ISS, processing time for a DS-2019 is 10-14 business days.
Please send the J-1 Information Sheet to the prospective intern to complete. This will assist with completing the DS-2019 Request Form.
Please complete this entire form with your request.
For your convenience, a checklist of all required documents is included on Page 1.
Please complete the entire form with your request. It is very important that the DS-7002 is complete and accurate, if it is not ISS cannot process the request.
We strongly encourage you to refer to our tips for completing the DS-7002.
International Student Services requires payment of a $260 non-refundable Student Intern Program Service Fee. The fee must be paid online, via credit card, before the DS-2019 is mailed to the Student Intern.
The Student Intern must complete the Student Intern Program Service Fee Agreement (below) to confirm that the fee will be paid. Once paid, the receipt must be emailed to iss@buffalo.edu before the DS-2019 will be mailed. It is also acceptable to include the receipt with the application materials.
Pay the Student Intern Program Service Fee on UB's Marketplace.
This fee is separate from the SEVIS fee, which is paid to the U.S. government after the DS-2019 is issued and before the visa appointment.
Acceptable financial documentation includes employment letters, bank statements or government/university funding.
Refer to the DS-2019 Request Form for estimated financial amounts.
Submit a copy of the Student Intern's CV or resume.
Submit a copy of the letter of invitation for the Student Intern. A sample letter for reference can be found below. Please be sure to edit this template so it reflects the individual student situation.
Submit a letter from the Student Intern’s academic institution. This letter must include the following language: "the student is in good academic standing and that the internship will fulfill the educational objectives for the student’s current degree program". The letter must also include confirmation that the student will maintain enrollment at the home institution during the internship.
If the letter is missing this required language we are unable to process the request.
Submit the completed English Language Proficiency Attestation along with the relevant supporting documentation (recognized English language test, signed documentation from an academic institution or English language school or interview conducted by the sponsor in person, by video conference or, if unavailable, by telephone.)
Submit a copy of the Student Intern's biographic page.
