The LGBTQ Faculty and Staff Association's Pride Scholarship was first awarded in 2022 to honor a student who can demonstrate academic success, financial need, and a commitment to LGBTQ advocacy or education.
The scholarship is awarded every spring semester and the recipient is included in the annual Lavender Reception, a commencement and recognition ceremony that celebrates the achievements of graduating students who identify with the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer community at UB.
Tendaji Ya’Ukuu '24 (they/them) is an agender-bisexual junior in the Environmental Design B.A program, born and raised in the South Bronx. They are passionate about Black and LGBTQ+ Liberation, Arcology, and Community-centered Ecological Sustainability. Tendaji has a track record of giving back through service awards and leadership roles in high school and college, as well as working with notable nonprofit organizations. As a Student Government President, Tendaji collaborated with student leaders to improve student engagement and involvement, creating a more inclusive campus environment for students of diverse lived experiences. Their ultimate goal is to create innovative and sustainable solutions that improve the conditions of the people around them. Tendaji currently works as an Ecological Justice Coordinator in Buffalo, NY, with Open Buffalo, leading clean mobility projects and equitable neighborhood adoptions of regenerative and cooperative economies. In their spare time, they work on three community projects: ManyXMovements, a digital hub for people power building; EcOtesha, an arcological cooperative focused on sustainability and human flourishing; and The Bi+ Youth Project, an advocacy group for bi+ individuals.
Hannah Krull '23 (she/her) is a queer upper-year student and Honors Scholar at UB. Hannah self-identifies that she grew up poor, in rural Northern Appalachia, and was briefly unhoused as a result of domestic violence. She held an integral role in the founding and growth of Cuba Cultural Center, a non-profit food insecurity organization that served over 400,000 meals in 2021. Hannah is now working-class and pursuing both a BA (double majoring in Sociology and Global Gender Studies) as well as an MS-ILS (Master of Science, Information and Library Science) with a focus in disability justice and information equity practices. Hannah is an Honors College scholar on track to graduate with departmental honors from both of her majors, a Sociology Department College Ambassador, and is participating in the Sociology Department Undergraduate Teaching Assistantship pilot program.
