Elections and Appointments

In accordance with Association bylaws, executive board positions are filled through a process of elections and appointments each spring.

Some board positions are elected, filled through an election open to active FSA members. Other board positions are appointed, filled by presidential appointment with the advice and approval of a simple majority of the executive board.

Fall 2024 Treasurer Vacancy

The LGBTQ Faculty and Staff Association seeks to fill an Executive Board vacancy in the role of Treasurer. Association bylaws state:

Article V - Executive Board; Section V - Powers and Duties; e. Treasurer: There shall be a Treasurer to receive all monies paid directly to this Association; keep an account of all receipts and expenditures; pay or authorize for payment all bills properly charged against the Association; draft an annual budget; make arrangements for an audit as required; present, in writing, a financial report at the end of each Association fiscal year and/or at any other time upon request of the Executive Board; and shall take all action required by the University in accordance with University policy and procedure.

Article V - Executive Board; Section IX - Vacancies
: Vacancies on the Board during terms of office may occur. Should the President position become vacant, the Vice President may preside as an interim President. Should any other role on the Executive Board become vacant, the President, with approval of a simple majority of the board, may determine whether a special election or appointment shall occur.

  • Interested candidates may submit self nomination.
  • The self nomination period will be November 11 - November 22, 2024
  • The term of office for filling the vacancy will be December 6, 2024 - June 30, 2025.

Spring 2025 Open Positions

Elected Positions

Terms begin on June 1, 2025.

  • President (2 year term)
  • Vice President (2 year term)
  • Member at Large (3 positions available, 1 year term)

Appointed Positions

Terms begin on July 1, 2025.

  • Secretary (2 year term)
  • Treasurer (2 year term)
  • Membership Coordinator (2 year term)

Nominations

Interested candidates must express intent using the self nomination form. As part of the form, candidates will be asked to answer questions regarding their interest and experience:

  • Why are you interested in this position?
  • What experiences do you have that may be relevant to this position?
  • How would you plan to be successful in this position?

Responses to these questions will be considered the candidate statement. Candidate statements for those seeking an elected position will be made available to active FSA members and statements for those seeking an appointed position will be made available to FSA leadership.

Active members may recommend another member for a position using the recommendation form. After a recommendation form is submitted, the recommended member will be contacted so that they can consider self nomination.

Timeline

A timeline for the Spring 2025 elections and appointments cycle will be available in April 2025.

Eligibility and Expectations

At the time of self nomination and for the duration of term, board officers must be Active members of the FSA as outlined in Association bylaws and be committed to fulfilling the duties of the position. Individuals are encouraged to receive supervisor support.

Additionally, elected and appointed officers are expected to:

  • Attend and contribute to monthly board meetings and semesterly general membership meetings.
  • Be informed about the FSA mission, bylaws, and constitution.
  • Serve on committees and take on special assignments.
  • Seek to understand the needs of FSA members.
  • Be a champion for and promote the FSA.

Elections and Appointments Committee

As stated in the Association bylaws, the President shall appoint, with a simple majority vote of the Executive Board, a Chair for each election and appointment cycle. The Chair for the cycle should convene a committee of at least one Executive Board officer and one Active member. The Chair and the committee shall develop a roster of eligible candidates, conduct an election open to Active members of the Association, and present a final tally of the results to the committee for certification. The person receiving the highest number of votes cast for each office shall be certified as elected to that officer role. The Chair and the committee shall also present candidates for appointed officer roles to the Board for appointment.
