Dear University Community:
At UB and across the national higher education community, our thoughts are very much with our fellow universities, Penn State and Syracuse University, who are struggling with the aftermath of tragic events that have recently come to light. While our first thoughts are with the victims, their families, and the campus communities impacted by these tragedies, these events are also a sobering reminder of our own ethical responsibility to contribute to a campus climate that is a safe, secure place to live, learn, work, and visit. As individuals and as a university community, all of us at UB are accountable for helping to ensure the well-being of our students, fellow employees, and visitors.
The University at Buffalo is committed to taking all necessary measures to ensure a safe and secure campus environment. One of our most critical responsibilities as members of the university community is the obligation to promptly report suspected criminal activity and security concerns to the university police. It is vitally important to take immediate action when wrongdoing is seen or suspected. If you have any concerns about potential criminal activity—whether you are a victim yourself, or you believe a fellow student, employee, or visitor may be endangered—please immediately contact University Police at (716) 645-2222.
I also want to ensure you are aware that several university policies and procedures exist to further the prevention and reporting of incidents of violence, harassment, and abuse. I urge all members of the campus community to familiarize themselves with these policies and procedures. For additional information on relevant laws, I encourage you to visit the University Police website.
