Dear University Community:

Together with Provost Zukoski, it is my great pleasure to announce the appointment of Dr. Venu Govindaraju, SUNY Distinguished Professor of Computer Science and Engineering and the founding director of UB’s Center for Unified Biometrics and Sensors, as Vice President for Research and Economic Development, effective immediately.

As you know, Dr. Govindaraju has been serving in this leadership post in an interim capacity since September 2014. An internationally renowned expert in machine learning, pattern recognition, and biometrics who has made transformative contributions to his field at a global level, Dr. Govindaraju has brought tremendous expertise to this position, as well as a deep and broad-based understanding of our university’s unique strengths, opportunities, and challenges as we advance our interdisciplinary research enterprise in the 21st century.

Recently named a Fellow of the National Academy of Inventors, Dr. Govindaraju is also a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), the Association of Computing Machinery (ACM), the International Association of Pattern Recognition (IAPR), and SPIE, the International Society of Optics and Photonics.

Under his leadership as Interim Vice President, our university’s research enterprise has made a number of significant strides. As just a few examples, UB has continued to build our ranks of world-renowned research faculty; we have significantly advanced our interdisciplinary research paradigm through the launch of the Communities of Excellence initiative, the Creative Arts Initiative, and other major endeavors; and we have expanded our economic impact while spurring entrepreneurship in our region and state through our technology transfer, support for local business, and enhanced linkages with business and industry. UB also continues to distinguish itself among its peer research institutions nationally and globally, as exemplified by UB’s leadership in NSF and NIH research consortia such as our new Clinical and Translational Science Award, which brings our UB-led consortium into an elite national tier.

Dr. Govindaraju’s accomplishments in an interim capacity have positioned UB very strongly for success in advancing our ambitious research agenda. I look forward to his continued leadership and contributions as our university works to build even further on this success.

Sincerely,

Satish K. Tripathi
