UB-HWI Announcement

Published May 29, 2024

I, along with Samuel Russo, Chairman of the Hauptman-Woodward Medical Research Institute (HWI) Board of Directors, am pleased to announce that HWI will be joining the University at Buffalo, pending expected approvals.

Since HWI’s founding in 1956, the University at Buffalo and HWI have been academic and research partners keenly focused on bringing our values to life by improving the health and well-being of individuals and communities in our region, nation and across the world.

As HWI prepares to join UB, we are deeply committed to preserving the rich legacy of HWI. For over 40 years, Dr. Herbert Hauptman, Nobel Laureate, dedicated himself to enriching the world around him as a scholar, educator and mentor. HWI has been fortunate to have world-class, dedicated scientists who are at the forefront of their fields, a strong research staff who support the institute’s scientific mission and strong support staff to sustain the operations of HWI.

We are pleased to note that the HWI building will be gifted to the university (subject to required approvals) and the facility will continue to serve as a hub of scientific research. Dr. Hauptman’s legacy will be preserved in perpetuity with the institute named as the University at Buffalo-Hauptman Woodward Institute (UB-HWI). The legacy of the many friends of and donors to HWI will also be preserved with existing gifts to HWI continuing to support activities in accordance with the donors’ intentions.

By leveraging the enhanced capabilities of HWI within the university—in fields including structural biology, artificial intelligence, computational chemistry and drug discovery, among others—we imagine significant research growth positively impacting the health and well-being of individuals for generations to come. With UB’s and HWI’s shared mission of research, education and engagement with our communities, we are very excited to welcome the members of the HWI community into the UB community. As UB-HWI, we look forward to expanding our research impact for the benefit of our region and world.
