Delivered June 16, 2023
Good morning!
Thank you for joining us as we celebrate Bloomsday in a most meaningful way!
This day is always important to us because of our magnificent James Joyce collection. But today, we also celebrate that this distinctive scholarly treasure of UB’s Special Collections will soon be accessible to the world in a home worthy of its renown.
I am delighted to share that, with Senator Tim Kennedy as our champion, and with the support of Governor Hochul, UB’s James Joyce Museum will be a reality—right here in beautiful Abbott Hall.
With this museum, we are reaffirming the significance of UB’s Joyce collection to our university, our broader community in Buffalo and Western New York, and our friends and colleagues around the globe.
Developing a designated James Joyce Museum will help attract considerably more visitors—and visibility—to what is the most comprehensive collection of Joyce materials in the world.
It will also enhance our institutional reputation and impact, helping us achieve our ambition to situate UB among the Top 25 public research universities in the nation.
On behalf of our entire university community, I would like to thank Senator Kennedy for his steadfast support of UB and our mission of excellence.
I would also like to extend my gratitude to Governor Hochul for her commitment to amplify our impact as New York State’s flagship university.
And now, it is my pleasure to welcome UB’s great friend, Senator Tim Kennedy, to the podium.
