Dear Colleagues:
I am writing to share that Dr. Julius Adams, Executive Director of the Buffalo Educational Opportunity Center (BEOC) will retire from the University at Buffalo on December 31, 2022. Dr. Adams has served as Executive Director of the BEOC since 2012. Throughout his tenure as Executive Director, Dr. Adams has led the creation of quality programs that prepare non-traditional and economically disadvantaged students for careers and future success.
Early in his tenure as Executive Director, Dr. Adams oversaw the move of the BEOC building to its new building on Ellicott Street. Strategically located in proximity to the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus, the facility is a gateway to the surrounding community, allowing the BEOC to emphasize academic and vocational programming for the various allied health fields in Western New York. Dr. Adams also redesigned the BEOC Advisory Council to better represent stakeholders, including representatives from state and local institutions, to promote better community utilization of BEOC programs and wider involvement in planning and implementing programs and opportunities.
Dr. Adams is a leader among the SUNY network of EOCs directors. In 2014, Dr. Adams negotiated with New York State Education Department to ensure that all 12 EOCs were included in the Common Core Master Training that was developed for K-12 teachers. In addition, Dr. Adams co-developed the WNY High School Equivalency Network of adult education programs in the region to enhance the success of students taking tests.
Dr. Adams received a bachelor's degree in psychology, and master's and doctoral degrees in educational psychology, all from UB. In recognition of his contributions to enhancing opportunities for historically marginalized communities, in 2022, Dr. Adams received the Economic and Workforce Development Partnership Award from the New York Association for Training and Employment Professionals.
Dr. Adams has had a significant impact on the Buffalo Educational Opportunity Center and our wider community. Please join me in thanking Dr. Adams for his commitment to the BEOC and wishing him all the best in his retirement.
I will commence a search for the next BEOC Executive Director this semester.
Sincerely,
A. Scott Weber Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs
