Esports Varsity League

A silver UBuffalo spirit mark is lit up by neon blue lights in the LevelUp gaming space in the Lockwood Library.

UB Esports Varsity teams compete in the Esports Collegiate Conference (ESC) which is operated by the Mid-American Conference (MAC) of the NCAA.

Varsity League

UBuffalo has four varsity teams that compete in the Esports Collegiate Conference (ESC): League of Legends, Valorant, Overwatch 2, and Rocket League. Esports, unlike traditional sports, has a shifting ecosystem. As new games are launched or change in popularity, the ESC may add or drop games as they see fit.

Battle for the Buffalo Invitational

UB's varsity esports teams hosted their first LAN competition in Spring 2024, where local teams from rival colleges linked up and plugged in to play Valorant, League of Legends, Rocket League, Overwatch, Smash Crews and Smash Singles.

Over 100 participants from six local collegiate crews (University at Buffalo, Buffalo State, Brockport, Villa Maria, Canisius, D’Youville and Daemen) came to duke it out for prizes and bragging rights. Check out the photo highlights above.

Varsity Teams

Our varsity teams are comprised of full-time undergraduate and graduate students. All students compete for one semester per year in the ESC, but have opportunities for year-round competition. This includes Valorant and Rocket League in the fall and League of Legends and Overwatch 2 in the spring.

League of Legends Overwatch Rocket League Valorant

About the Game: A team of 5 players assumes a champion character's roles with unique abilities that vary around the selected class type. Two teams battle against another team's selected champions to destroy the opposing team's Nexus. For players to be successful, communication and teamwork are a must, combined with research and understanding of over 150 in-game champions to play. League of Legends was developed and published by Riot Games in 2009.

In the Esports Collegiate Conference (ESC), our varsity teams compete in League of Legends in the spring.

Varsity Team Recruitment

Think you've got what it takes to compete with us on a varsity level? Show us what you can bring to our team during our tryouts! Typically, tryouts for all varsity teams take place in early fall and early spring prior to the season start.

If you’re interested in trying out for our varsity teams outside of our typical tryout window, please contact us for more information. Mid-semester or off-season tryouts will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
