Student Life at the University at Buffalo (UB) is a vibrant place to work. We have employment opportunities for people from all walks of life, from cleaning jobs to career-level associates who set the division’s direction for the next year, five years, and beyond. Positions we hire for include skilled trades, clerical/administrative support, accounting, purchasing, IT, career coaching and residence hall directors. We have the right job for you.
We are always looking for individuals who are team-oriented. Help shape our world’s future leaders while working at a flagship university of the SUNY system. Take a moment to read what a handful of our staff has to say about working here.
In Student Life, every job matters. Any vacancy can impact student retention and success. So, in exchange for the care and commitment our staff brings to each of their roles, the university provides outstanding benefits, including world-class health insurance, generous paid-sick and vacation time, and a variety of retirement options.
Working at UB offers world-class benefits that exceed salary alone. There are personal rewards such as health and retirement plans, training opportunities and access to recreational resources. Here, people from all backgrounds and cultures challenge and inspire each other to discover, learn and succeed. We focus on creating and sustaining a healthy mix of work, personal life, and academic pursuits in an effort to support work-life effectiveness.
One of the unique things about working in Student Life is our cyclical nature. Every fall we celebrate a new academic year; every May we celebrate commencement. With these milestones, we also see staff changes and therefore tend to have more positions open from February through May but at UB, we are always hiring.
In a typical year, Campus Living houses up to 7,500 students at UB. Our skilled trades and custodial staff care for the buildings our students live in. Their first priority is the health and safety of our students. Without dedicated cleaners and maintenance staff, the university would not be able to have a residential program.
All of the Student Life trades and custodial staff work within UB’s residential halls and apartments. We have a separate staff from that of the University Facilities department because working in our students’ bedrooms and bathrooms comes with unique demands and challenges. Both are great departments to work within, but you will see the immediate impact you have on students working in Student Life.
Custodial and skilled trades positions all require the applicant:
In addition, trades positions require one or more of the following
* Successful completion of the traineeship and the training program includes a total of 288 hours of trade-specific classroom instruction, 45 hours of technical math coursework, 45 hours of technical communications coursework, and 15 hours of blueprint/schematic reading coursework. Coursework must be completed with an average of C or better. Additionally, successful completion of the traineeship also includes 4,000 hours of on-the-job training.
There are a variety of positions in Student Life, but not all are state positions. Some staff are employed by the UB Research Foundation, and others by the Faculty Student Association.

Working at UB....environment rich in cultural, diversity - many support/networking opportunities beyond Student Life:
Western New York is one of the best-kept secrets in the country. Here you will find four distinct seasons and plenty of indoor and outdoor activities to keep busy during each of them.
UB’s campuses are a 20-minute drive from one of the seven wonders of the world, Niagara Falls and we are famous for chicken wings and professional sports. But unless you are from here you might not know that the Buffalo has one of the world’s best collections of 20th-century art, or that we boast buildings by Frank Lloyd Wright and Louis Sullivan. With downtown Buffalo sitting on the shore of Lake Erie, summers are filled with boating, swimming and concerts on the shore and conversely, you can leave downtown and be on a ski slope within an hour during the winter. If you are more of an indoor person there are a variety of museums, performing arts centers and a casino right in downtown Buffalo.
The Buffalo Niagara region is a major metropolitan area with a diverse blend of communities. We’re known for our welcoming nature, our spirited loyalty and our penchant for fully embracing each of our four brilliant seasons. Get past the snowy stereotype and you’ll be captivated. You might never leave.
