Michael Osadciw (BA ’93), photos by J. Adam Fenster
Osadciw, a longtime volunteer for the St. Joseph’s Day festival in Rochester, N.Y., self-published this slim but gorgeous coffee table book as a labor of love for the local Ukrainian community. As he wrote to At Buffalo, “This book was something I’ve wanted to do for a few years now to show off all that goes into pulling off the festival and to focus on the volunteers who make it happen.” (SSDC Inc., 2013)
Jack Fisher (BS ’97, MD ’62)
Fisher, professor emeritus of surgery at UC San Diego, references history, geology and local narratives as he relates his 50-year battle to stop the building of another road through the wilderness of the Sierra Nevada, the 400-mile mountain range that includes Lake Tahoe, Mount Whitney and the Yosemite Valley. Amy Aderman (MLS ’11)
Aderman’s self-published fantasy-adventure novel evokes the wintry worlds of “Narnia” and “The Snow Queen.” The tale follows Gerda and her twin brother, Kai, who becomes corrupted by a sinister sliver of mirror glass. (CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform, 2013)
Donna Carol Maheady (MS ’81)
This collection of true stories features nurses who overcame significant odds on the job as they dealt with their own physical and mental disabilities. Maheady also includes practical tips on how to navigate the vocational rehabilitation system. (CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform, 2014)
James Ostrowski (BA ’80)
Drawing on 45 years in politics, law and the Liberty Movement for his latest book, Ostrowski aims to expose the “hidden premises” of American progressivism—as well as its main opponent, conservatism—and show how both have led to destructive national policies that ignore “true liberalism.” (Cazenovia Books, 2014)
Dianne Bennett (JD ’75) and William Graebner
Hungry to write more about the city they love, Bennett, a prominent Buffalo attorney, and Graebner, a widely published historian, follow up their 2009 travel guide “Rome the Second Time” with new itineraries, along with commentary that digs deep into four Roman neighborhoods. (Curious Traveler Press, 2013
