UB 63, Western Michigan 60 The Bulls held off a late charge by Western Michigan, defeating the visiting Broncos 63-60 on Jan. 26 in Alumni Arena. The victory was the Bulls' third straight win at home. A bucket by Damien Foster started a 12-0 run for the Bulls, giving UB a 55-41 lead with 8:27 to play. But the Broncos came charging back, using a 10-0 run to close the lead down to one point, 59-58, with under a minute to play. Kerry Hendrickson scored with just 0:33 remaining, a basket that would turn out to be the eventual game-winner. After a layup by WMU cut the UB lead to one, Foster converted on two free throws to secure the win. The Bulls saw their two-game winning streak come to an end Saturday afternoon, losing at Ball State 82-68. Trailing 37-26 at halftime, UB scored the first five points of the half. But Ball State maintained its lead, and pushed it to 10 points, 64-54, with 6:47 to play. UB then went on an 8-1 run, cutting the lead to just three-points. Vasiliev started the run with a three-pointer and Mike McKie followed with a jumper in the lane. After a Ball State free throw, Jon Kleidon hit a huge three-pointer to make it a 65-62 game with five minutes to play. After a Foster three-point attempt to tie the game rimmed out, Ball State came down and hit a three-pointer of its own and then hit free throws down the stretch for the 82-68 final score.
Women
UB 54, Marshall 49 Junior center Tiffany Bell scored 21 points to lead UB to its second-straight Mid-American Conference road victory, a 54-49 win at Marshall. The Bulls led 30-22 at halftime, but the Thundering Herd rallied in the second half. Marshall tied the score, 41-41, with 9:43 left before the Bulls went on a crucial 9-1 run to take a 50-42 lead with 6:16 left. Marshall pulled within, 52-49, with :28 left but junior Mari McClure hit two free throws with :17 left to clinch the win. Miami University outscored UB 16-4, in the final minutes Saturday afternoon to score a 59-49 MAC victory in Alumni Arena. The Red Hawks overcame a late first-half and early second-half surge by the Bulls to improve to 11-7 overall and 5-3 in the MAC. UB saw a three-game winning streak snapped and fell to 15-5 and 5-4 in the MAC. Miami moved a half-game ahead of Buffalo in the MAC East Division with the win.
Men
UB 150, Northern Illinois 91 The men's swimming and diving team remained undefeated in the MAC as it beat host Toledo, 127-114, and Northern Illinois, 150-91, in a MAC double dual meet this past weekend. Coach Budd Termin's team won nine out of 13 events. Winners included Dan Hickey (200 free - 1:41.51, 100 free - 46.41), John Nilles (50 free - 21:04), Jason McLachlan (500 free - 4:43.82), Josh Pun (200 fly - 1:55), Eric Stimson (200 back - 1:52.56), and Dave Sofer (1-meter diving - 250.65 pts.). Hickey, Pun, Nilles and Dexter Tatum were members of the winning 200 freestyle relay team with a time of 3:08.17.
Women
UB 166, Northern Illinois 132 The women's swimming and diving team defeated Northern Illinois, 166-132, and lost to host Toledo, 162-132, in a MAC double dual meet this past weekend. The Bulls are now are 5-4 overall and 3-3 in the conference. Inger Rooneem was the Bulls' top performer with wins in the 50 (24.06) and 100 (52.29) freestyles, the 200 individual medley (2:09.39) and the 200 relay medley (1:49.83). Wrestling
Kent 21, UB 9 The Bulls saw their overall dual meet record move to 8-3 on the season and 2-2 in the MAC after splitting a pair of matches at Kent State. The Bulls dropped a 21-9 decision to powerful Kent in the first. UB got wins from 157-pounder Jake Partlow, Gary Cooper at 165 pounds and freshman Joe Downey at 197 pounds. Buffalo rebounded with a 31-12 win over Marquette. Winners for the Bulls were Shawn Kegel at 133 pounds, Bill Jacoutot at 141 pounds, Ryan Bentley at 149 pounds, Gary Cooper at 165 pounds, Ben Cooper at 174 pounds, Josh States at 184 pounds and Joe Downey-with a forfeit win-at 197 pounds. Women Defeated Canisius, 121.5-46.5 The women's team won the UB Invitational on Friday in Alumni Arena, defeating Canisius and finished second on Saturday at the Don Wright Invitational at Western Ontario University. The men, meanwhile, finished first at the UB Invitational and second at Western Ontario.
