Faculty members and students representing UB's Turbulence Research Laboratory recently attended the annual meeting of the American Physical Society/Division of Fluid Dynamics held in New Orleans. Papers presented at the meeting included "The Effects of Reynolds Number on a Proper Orthogonal Decomposition of the Axisymetric Jet Mixing Layer" by Daehan Jung and William K. George, professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering; "Effect of Upstream Conditions on the Velocity Deficit Profile of Turbulent Boundary Layers" by Luciano Castillo and George; "Power Law vs. Log Law: What Should We Measure to Tell the Difference" by George, and "The Decay of Isotropic Turbulence and DNS Simulation" by Stephan Gamard and George. Also, "Large Eddy Simulation of Turbulent Reacting Round Jets" by Sean C. Garrick, Farhad A. Jaberi and Peyman Givi, professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering; "An experimental Study of Scalar Mixing of a Transverse Jet in a Pipe" by Gang Pan, Winston Yang and Hui Meng, associate professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering; "Studying Particle Flows Using Holographic PIV" by Ye Pu, Xiangqun Song and Meng, and "A Direct Numerical Simulation of the Flow Past a Surface-Mounted Mixing Tab" by Suchuan Dong and Meng. In addition, "Dynamics of Tab-Wake Vortices" by Yang and Meng; "DNS and the LES Closure of Reacting Vortex Ring Using Detailed Chemical Kinetics" by Cosmin Safta and Cyrus K. Madnia, assistant professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering; "Evolution of Turbulent Kinetic Energy in Reacting Turbulent Shear Flows" by Daniel Livescue, Jaberi and Madnia, and "Vortex Ring-Diffusion Flame Interaction: A Numerical Study" by Madnia, S. Enachescu and Safta.

Department of Architecture graduate students Mui Lai Chan, Noboru Inoue and Scott Nunemaker received an honorable mention for their entry in the "International Car Design Competition 2000-Personal Mobility 2050" sponsored by Car Styling magazine. Their submission for the preliminary phase of the competition was published in the September 1999 issue of Car Styling. Their final entry will be published in the March 2000 issue of the magazine. In addition, their winning entry boards are on display at the "Tokyo Auto Salon 2000."

Lucinda Finley, professor of law, will be honored for her contributions to the legal community at a luncheon in celebration of Women in the Law and Women's History Month, to be held Feb. 25 in the Golden Ballroom of the Statler Towers.

Abir Mullick, associate professor of architecture, attended-at the invitation of the United Nations-a "Seminar on Environmental Accessibility: Issues in Planning and Design of Accessible Urban Development" held in Beirut. The seminar was sponsored by the Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia in conjunction with the government of Lebanon and the Lebanese Company for the Development and Reconstruction of Beirut Central District.
