Athletes of the Week

Joe Clark of the men's track and field team was named the Most Valuable Athlete at the SUNY Centers Cham-pionships in Binghamton. Clark won two individual events, the 200 meters (21.85) and 400 meters (47.76). He also anchored both of UB's winning relay squads, with the 4x100 team setting a school-record time of 41.53 and the 4x400 squad winning in 3:16.56. The Bulls won the team title with 216 points.

Biaunca McFarland of the women's track-and-field team also was named as the Most Valuable Athlete at the SUNY Centers Champion-ships. McFarland returned to her hometown to capture two individual first-place victories and a relay crown, winning the 200 meters in a personal-best 25.46 and the triple jump at 39-8 (12.11m), her best performance of the season. She also anchored the Bulls' winning 4x400 relay squad to a 3:53.50 finish. UB won the team title with 247 points.

Baseball

UB had a busy week, going 1-6, with the lone victory being a non-conference win at Niagara on April 17.

The week started with a sweep by Mid-American Conference foe Kent State at Dunn Tire Park. Bryan Sanchez hit two home runs in the nightcap.

Against Niagara, Sanchez again went deep and three Bulls' pitchers combined to strand 14 Purple Eagles' runners as UB did not trail in the game.

UB led 7-4 through six innings of the opener before Miami rallied with five runs in the final two at-bats.

Miami scored four times in the first inning of both games on Saturday as UB never led in the doubleheader.

The Bulls finished the series on Sunday with a 14-3 loss to the Red Hawks. UB committed five errors and stranded 15 baserunners.

Softball

UB 5, Kent State 0; Kent State 1, UB 0; Kent State 6, UB 4

UB split a doubleheader with visiting Kent State on Saturday, shutting out the Golden Flashes, 5-0, in the opener before losing the nightcap, 1-0. The Bulls rallied in the series finale on Sunday, but fell short, losing 6-4.

Freshman pitcher Stacey Evans picked up her second win of the season with a one-hitter, while striking out a career-high nine batters in the opener.

Breanne Nasti hit her sixth home run of the season, a two-run shot, in the final inning of Sunday's contest.

Football

White 19, Blue 17

The White team used a trio of interceptions to down the Blue team, 19-17, in the annual Blue-White football scrimmage on April 17 in UB Stadium.

In a modified scoring format, the White team scored nine points off of the turnovers and also blocked a field goal attempt worth another three points, while dominating most of the action. The Blue team got both of its touchdowns late on a one-yard run by leading rusher Marquis Dwarte and a 15-yard pass from redshirt freshman Jeff Powell to senior tight end Chad Bartoszek.

Tennis

Women's

Bowling Green 7, UB 0
Ball State 7, UB 0

UB was swept at home by Bowling Green on Friday and Ball State on Saturday. The Bulls now are 2-15 and 0-9 in the MAC.

Men's

Bowling Green 7, UB 0
Ball State 7, UB 0

UB fell on the road to both Bowling Green and Ball State by identical 7-0 decisions. UB (9-10, 0-5) hosts the MAC Championships at the UB Tennis Center at the Ellicott Complex today, tomorrow and Saturday

Track and Field

Bulls win SUNY Centers title

The men's and women's track-and-field teams swept to first-place finishes at the SUNY Centers Championships in Binghamton. The women scored 247 points to finish ahead of runner-up Binghamton (165), Albany (149) and Stony Brook (61) in the four-team meet. The men's squad tallied 216 points, ahead of Albany (198), Binghamton (134) and Stony Brook (92). The women won 14 of the 19 events, while the men placed first in 11 events.

Clark, meanwhile, sprinted to first-place finishes in the 200 meters (21.85) and 400 meters (47.76). He also anchored both of UB's winning relay squads.

Sarah Fletcher won three events, taking the hammer throw at 181-5 (55.30m), the discus at 142-10 (43.54m) and the javelin at 107-0 (32.65m).

Men's thrower Byron McKinney won both the shot put at 52-9 (16.09m) and the hammer at 160-7 (48.95m).

Crew

UB wins Chancellor's Cup for second consecutive year

The crew squad competed in the SUNY Championships in the Bronx on Sunday, winning three of four races. The varsity eight, novice four and novice eight squads each took first-place finishes, while the varsity four entry placed third overall. Combined with UB's men's club team, the Bulls accumulated enough points to earn the SUNY Chancellor's Cup for the second consecutive year.
