Provide support for investigating the evolving relationship between emerging technologies and the built environment with this fund.
The Center for Architecture and Situated Technologies (CAST) focuses on the evolving and growing implications of new technologies and the built environment. Our project-based research addresses the material, social, cultural and political implications for architecture and urbanism of mobile and embedded computing, environmental sensing, responsive systems and advanced digital fabrication techniques.
With its research located at the intersection of architecture, new media, and computational technologies, CAST is interested in the possibilities offered by computational systems for rethinking human interaction with (and within) the built environment. Our focus areas include learning environments, design environments, responsive architecture, and locative media.
The group explores methods of study and conducts experiments that probe the limits of architecture through prototypes, processes, techniques, modes of collaboration and workflows. It adopts new methods to identify new sites of inquiry, at different scales and within different social and political settings, for an expanded field of practice.
This fund provides operational or research support and enhancements for the Center.
