About Us

Members of the Archaeological Survey, a group led by Douglas Perrelli with the department of anthropology, works on a dig site at the Michigan St. Baptist Church in Buffalo, NY in July 2024. They have uncovered numerous items each day of the dig. Photographer: Meredith Forrest Kulwicki.

UB Archaeological Survey is a 36CFR61-qualified not-for-profit research, contracting and applied archaeology institution within the University at Buffalo Department of Anthropology.

Established in 1969, UB Archaeological Survey is the legacy of Dr. Marian E. White (1921-1975), a distinguished UB archaeology professor and an early proponent of archaeological site preservation and cultural resource management (CRM).

Dr. White recognized the need for highly qualified professional archaeologists with local and regional perspectives to carry out research programs and to protect the dwindling and non-renewable archaeological resources of our community.

Today, UB Archaeological Survey is a leader in CRM, a growing field that involves locating, investigating, preserving and managing cultural resources including Pre-Contact archaeological sites, historic archaeological sites. landscapes and architecture.

Facilities and Equipment

We enjoy the shared resources of a major research university including world-class labs, libraries and research support. In addition, UB is home to Empire AI, which will house one of the most powerful supercomputers in the world built for academic research and discovery.

The Archaeological Survey lab encompasses over 2,800-square feet of space, with several adjoining rooms equipped with all the necessary tools for cleaning, processing, documenting and cataloging artifacts and ecofacts. Additionally, the Department of Anthropology offers access to classrooms, office space and materials.

The facilities include sinks, drafting equipment, flotation processing equipment, drying racks, and ample counter and storage space.  We also have or provide access to a flotation device, soil aggers, USGS 15 and 7.5min grids, comparative collection for zooarcharchaeology/Faunal, chert, paleolithic point, beads, replica of Hopewell mounds, and more.

Material is cataloged and curated in conjunction with the Marian E. White Anthropology Museum. The museum is currently overseen by Dr. Douglas Perrelli and consists of 8,600-square feet of secure adjoining rooms, including a reference library.
