Philosophy Department Awards

Through the generous support of our UB Alumni and friends, each year we recognize the academic excellence of our undergraduate students by awarding a special scholarship, and, an essay prize.

Mary C. Whitman Scholarship

APPLY BEFORE APRIL 10

The Mary C. Whitman Scholarship is awarded annually to a Philosophy major who will be a senior during the year the scholarship is held. The award is made on the basis of academic excellence and demonstration of financial need. The recipient is eligible to participate in the Philosophy Honors Program and to enroll in a graduate philosophy course each semester during the term of the scholarship.  

Applications must include a one-page personal statement outlining the student's plans in philosophy and philosophy engagement for their senior year. Applications and supporting documents are to be submitted online:  Log-in to Apply.

Scholarship Award: variable, up to $4,700.

Scholarship Criteria: Must be a current student of the College of Arts and Sciences with preference to those who have declared a major or minor in the Philosophy Department; Must complete the FAFSA, have financial need, and be in good academic standing.

Current students sign-in using UBIT credentials. Once you sign-in, complete the General Application and provide answers to any supplemental questions based on your HUB profile and application responses. You can upload the supporting documents while responding to basic instructions, such as:

  • Please tell us about your academic pursuits and how you became interested in philosophy.
  • Please submit your research essay from a philosophy course.
  • Please name two faculty members who would support your candidacy for this scholarship, if consulted.
  • Please confirm that you will be a senior for the academic year in which these funds will be disbursed.
     

Steinberg Prize

APPLY BEFORE APRIL 10

The Steinberg Prizes are given each year to the best original works on a philosophical theme by UB philosophy undergraduates who also demonstrate financial need. The work can be on a mainstream philosophical problem or on a more advanced and specialized topic. 

Original essays, poems, stories, or artworks also qualify. The typical submission is a polished version of a larger paper (greater than 6 pages) that has been submitted for a philosophy class, and on which positive feedback has been received from the instructor or from another faculty member.

Muriel and Charles Steinberg established the Steinberg Prize essay competition in the late 1970s. Funding is currently being continued through their daughter, Dr. Carol Steinberg Gould.

The Steinberg Prizes are variable, up to $1,000.
