The Department of Philosophy recognizes exemplary performance by undergraduate Majors and Minors. Majors may achieve either Honors or Distinction; Minors may achieve Distinction. For either, at least 50% of the courses constituting the Major or Minor shall be UB Philosophy courses.

Honors

Philosophy Majors seeking Honors complete the five required courses in ethics, logic, metaphysics and epistemology, and history of philosophy, and seven (rather than six) electives. At least one of the seven electives shall be at the senior (4xx) level or higher. This may be an undergraduate senior course or seminar, graduate seminar for undergraduate credit, Honors Tutorial, Honors Thesis or Project, or Undergraduate Research and Creative Activities, for at least three credits.

Acceptance as a candidate for Honors is based upon evaluation of the student's Philosophy studies at the time of application (see Requirements for Honors Admission below) and requires approval by Philosophy's Director of Undergraduate Studies. A student seeking Honors should apply for candidacy not later than the first semester of his or her final year of Philosophy studies.

Requirements for Honors Admission

  • Overall grade-point average: 3.0 or above.
  • Philosophy grade-point average: 3.25 or above. This average must include at least two courses taken at the advanced level at UB.
  • Senior class standing at time of entrance
  • Must have completed over half of the degree requirements for the Philosophy major.

Honors Distinction

Philosophy Majors and Minors with exemplary performance in the courses constituting the Major or Minor are recognized by designation of the Major or Minor as "With Distinction" if the student's grade point average for Philosophy courses is at least 3.25,  "With High Distinction" if the student's grade point average for Philosophy courses is at least 3.50, and as "With Highest Distinction" if the student's grade point average for Philosophy courses is at least 3.75.

To be eligible for recognition, a student must be accepted as a Philosophy Major or Minor at least one semester in advance of completion of the Major or Minor.
