IPE Leadership Team member, Dr. Ryan Krzyzanowicz and faculty facilitator, Sarah Krzyzanowicz presented on Interprofessional Collaborative Practice in Athletic Training at the New York State Athletic Trainers’ Association (NYSATA) Annual Meeting on Friday, June 7, 2019 in Schenectady, New York. This is an annual meeting that is designed to bring together all athletic trainers in New York for a continuing education event to hear the latest research applicable to clinicians.

During the meeting, Dr. Krzyzanowicz and Mrs. Krzyzanowicz presented to clinicians an overview of interprofessional education. They discussed what interprofessional collaborative practice is and why it is needed in athletic training. The Institute for Healthcare Improvement Quadruple Aim, specifically care team well-being, was the basis of preventing clinician burnout. They finished the presentation with examples of how to collaborate interprofessionally in various settings within athletic training, including an example that they used with their students proving care to runners at the Buffalo Marathon. They developed interprofessional care teams that consisted of an athletic training student, an emergency medicine resident, a primary care sports medicine fellow and a paramedic that all had roles to provide optimal care for the 7,500 runners at this year’s marathon.

Kim Krytus, IPE Leadership Team Member presented at the Aids Educating and Training Center Program (AETC) summit on May 30, 2019 to discuss and improve HIV-focused interprofessional education programs. The AETC is funded by Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) and supports New York, New Jersey, Puerto Rico, and US Virgin Islands. The partners for this initiative were SUNY Downstate and the University of Puerto Rico. The summit explored ways to include interprofessional education didactic and shared practice experiences for students from colleges of medicine,  nursing and pharmacy, as well as other health professionals for HIV programming.  Kim Krytus presented about the accomplishments and lessons learned from the Office of Interprofessional Education initiatives that are now delivered to over 1,000 students each year in 12 health-related professions.

IPE Leadership Team member, Dr. Lisa Jane Jacobsen presented her poster titled: 856 Student and Faculty from 9 professional Programs Come Together to Learn Interprofessional Strategies to Treat Opioid Dependence at the Taking Action Together: A Community Conversation on Opioids event hosted at the Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences on Thursday, February 28th, 2019 The event, co-hosted by the Erie Niagara Area Health Education Center (ENAHEC) and UB’s Clinical and Translational Science Institute (CTSI) was designed to bring together the multiple groups who are working to address the community’s opioid epidemic, as well as to showcase how opioid research can inform policy and impact delivery of care. 

During the networking session, Dr. Jacobsen presented on the Office of Interprofessional Education Fall IP Forum, Confronting Opioid Dependence: An Interprofessional Strategy. Dr. Jacobsen explained to attendees the logistics of the Fall IP Forum and how the student learning experiences were built by leadership team members from each of the 12 different health professions at UB. Jacobsen discussed the importance of collaborative practice to combat the opioid use disorder crisis and how the Fall IP forum's have shown positive student results in the understanding, prevention, and treatment of opioid use disorder.
