Keith A. Alford was named dean of the University at Buffalo School of Social Work in August 2021. He joined us from Syracuse University, where his many roles included program chair of the School of Social Work, inaugural chief diversity and inclusion officer for the university, and member of the executive leadership team. A former child protective services worker and therapeutic foster care supervisor, Alford has devoted his professional life to serving and researching the mental health needs of children and families and elevating the importance racial and social justice. He was previously involved with a National Science Foundation grant, supporting training of students in conducting trauma-informed research with veterans. Alford is a founding contributor to the Dialogue Circles to End Racism, an operation of InterFaith Works of Central New York.
Dr. Alford earned his PhD and MSW from The Ohio State University College of Social Work, and his BA from Coker University.
