Training Grants

Graduate students work with autonomous vehicles inside the lab of Rahul Rai, with mechanical and aerospace in the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences. UB engineers have been awarded a $1 million Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) grant to combine physics-based models with conventional, data-driven AI methods.

As part of the ambition to be a top 25 public research university, UB will become an internationally recognized training destination, training future generations of PhD students and postdoctoral scholars in cutting-edge research across all disciplines.

The Graduate School and the Office of the Vice President for Research and Economic Development (OVPRED) are collaborating to support training grant initiatives by centralizing access to required data, and identifying cohorts of interdisciplinary trainees to provide critical data.

Through mentor training and professional development experiences for existing eligible trainees, we will provide evidence of future grants' potential success and increase current trainees' success.

Goals

  1. Increase frequency of training grant application submission across programs.
  2. Increase number of training grants awarded to all three UB campuses.
  3. Increase the number of URM trainees at UB in all programs.

Advisory Committee

The training grant advisory committee is a group of experienced faculty who advise those who are new to applying for training grants. The group meets quarterly and is available to provide feedback on new training grant proposals in advance of the first submission. It is highly recommended that you submit your draft proposal to the committee at least three months before your external submission date.
