Dear University Community:
Earlier today, I had the pleasure of introducing Danny White to the university community as our new Director of Athletics. If you weren’t able to join us for this exciting announcement, you can read more about this appointment here.
Over the years, we have steadily been building a nationally competitive Division I program dedicated to the pursuit of academic and athletic excellence. With this national search, we set out to find a leader who would continue this upward momentum and take it to the next level of excellence—a leader who will help advance UB’s mission of excellence by ensuring that our intercollegiate athletics programs compete among the best in the nation. Out of a very deep pool of high-caliber candidates, Danny emerged as a top contender and an ideal fit for UB as we continue to build a top Division I athletics program.
Having a competitive intercollegiate athletics program is an important component in the success of any university, and a key element of student life. At the University at Buffalo, our pursuit of athletic excellence is a fully integrated aspect of our mission of academic excellence. As we searched for a new athletics director, it was important to us to find a leader with the proven experience to lead a top Division I program; one with the vision to realize the full potential of a promising athletic portfolio like UB’s; and most importantly, one with a special understanding of the role that a competitive intercollegiate athletics program plays in the success of a major AAU institution like UB.
Danny knows the world of intercollegiate athletics from nearly every vantage point: as a student athlete who competed in the NCAA basketball tournament with Notre Dame’s Fighting Irish; as a former assistant basketball coach at Ohio University, where he helped lead that team to win the MAC tournament; as a seasoned athletic administrator in several top Division I universities—most recently at the University of Mississippi, where he has served as senior associate athletic director since 2009.
It’s clear to everyone who meets him that Danny lives and breathes athletic excellence. In fact, intercollegiate athletics is something of a family business for the White family—his father Kevin is director of athletics at Duke University, and his brothers are both intercollegiate athletics professionals as well.
Now, Danny is poised to continue building on this legacy at the University at Buffalo, where he has stated that he sees “tremendous opportunity to lead the UB Bulls athletics program to new heights.” Please join me in welcoming the newest member of our senior leadership team, Danny White, to the UB family, together with his wife Shawn and children Aidan, Molly, and Caitlyn.
Go Bulls!
