Meet Anna-Kay Adamson-McDonald, a second-year medical student who is saving lives through education as a BLS instructor at UB Recreation.
For second-year medical student Anna-Kay Adamson-McDonald, becoming a part of UB Recreation was a fortunate twist of fate. In the summer of 2023, she took a Basic Life Support (BLS) class as a requirement for her program. Inspired by one of the instructors, a graduating medical student who had balanced both teaching and medical school, Anna-Kay decided to take on the challenge herself.
With guidance from Assistant Program Director Karen Mayfield, she completed her training and became a BLS instructor, merging her passion for healthcare with her love for teaching.
Being a medical student is no small feat, but Anna-Kay has found a way to balance her studies with her work at UB Recreation. She carefully structures her time to allocate space for classes, studying, teaching, and personal commitments. “Above all, I practice self-care and prioritize my well-being,” she says, making sure to spend time with family at the end of each week to recharge.
The flexibility of teaching evening and weekend shifts has allowed her to maintain this balance while continuing to grow as a future physician.

If given the opportunity to introduce a new program at UB Recreation, Anna-Kay would create a Narcan Training Course and Trainer Program. With the opioid crisis affecting communities across Erie County, she believes in the power of education to save lives. This initiative would teach participants how to recognize signs of overdose and properly administer naloxone, equipping them with the tools to make a meaningful difference.

Anna-Kay’s involvement with UB Recreation has provided her with more than just job experience, it has enriched her college life. While medical school often confines her to a rigorous academic environment, teaching CPR has allowed her to connect with students from diverse backgrounds.
“It’s a fun escape through teaching,” she says. She enjoys the challenge of making first-time learners feel confident while keeping experienced students engaged.

Her experience as a CPR instructor has had a profound impact on her professional growth. The countless hours spent demonstrating life-saving techniques and educating others will undoubtedly make her a stronger, more effective physician. “I strongly believe that my involvement with Recreation will positively impact my future career,” she affirms.

For students considering getting involved with UB Recreation, Anna-Kay has simple but powerful advice: “Go for it!” Whether using the fitness facilities or finding a role that aligns with their passions, students can discover opportunities that enhance both their personal and professional lives. “For me, it was teaching, and I am so happy I decided to take on that role!” she says.
Anna-Kay Adamson-McDonald’s journey with UB Recreation is a testament to the power of education, dedication, and community impact. As she continues her path toward becoming a physician, she carries with her the invaluable experience of teaching others how to save lives—one class at a time.
