Get real-world experience from a mentor in the field of student affairs, and find out if working for a college or university is the right career path for you.
The Student Affairs Mentoring Program and Leadership Experience (SAMPLE) is designed for undergraduate students who are interested in higher education and student affairs.
Through this program, which lasts for one academic year, you will be paired with an on-campus student affairs professional mentor who will help you learn more about careers in student affairs.
Student affairs is a critical department within higher education institutions that is responsible for providing support and resources to students outside of the classroom. The goal of student affairs is to help students succeed academically, socially, and personally.
Working in student affairs means being a part of a team that creates a welcoming and inclusive campus community, and provides students with opportunities to engage in extracurricular activities, leadership development, career exploration, and more. Some examples of jobs in student affairs include academic advisors, career counselors, residence hall directors, student activities coordinators, student life program directors, and diversity and inclusion officers.
These professionals work collaboratively to provide students with the tools they need to achieve their goals and succeed in college and beyond.
If you are interested in the SAMPLE program, please apply through UBLinked. Applicants will be contacted within three business days of submitting their application and will be accepted on a rolling basis.
Accepted students will meet with a staff member in Student Engagement to discuss their goals for the program and identify any interest areas in the field. This information will help us match you with a mentor that is right for you!
Students who participate in the SAMPLE program are also eligible to apply to the NASPA Undergraduate Fellows Program (NUFP), which is sponsored by a national association for student affairs professionals. The Student Engagement office will assist students who are interested in applying.
