The International Pharmaceutical Federation (FIP) has appointed Donald Mager, PharmD, PhD, chair and professor, University at Buffalo (UB) Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences, and John Pieper, PharmD, past president and professor emeritus at University of Health Sciences and Pharmacy in St. Louis, to leadership positions within the FIP Bureau.
FIP is the global body for pharmacy, pharmaceutical sciences and pharmaceutical education that works to support the development of the pharmacy profession through practice and emerging scientific innovations and through developing the pharmacy workforce to meet the world’s health care needs and expectations.
Mager and Pieper, both alumni of the UB School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, have been appointed leadership positions within the FIP Bureau, the board of FIP which consists of 14 elected officers.
Donald Mager, a BS ‘91, PharmD ’01 and PhD ’02 graduate has been appointed FIP vice president via the FIP Board of Pharmaceutical Sciences (BPS) and will serve a 4-year term.
The FIP BPS manages all scientific aspects of FIP’s activities and as vice president, Mager will serve as the link between the BPS and the FIP Bureau. He will represent the BPS at Bureau meetings and help the BPS achieve its strategic goals and further its mission. His goals as vice president include working with the Bureau and BPS to streamline strategic planning, finding new ways to engage student members and identifying interprofessional training opportunities as well as strengthening collaborations with member organizations.
Mager was appointed a Fellow of FIP in 2021 and has been an engaged member of FIP for over a decade, including serving as the founding chair of the PK/PD and Systems Pharmacology Special Interest Group.
John Pieper, a 1979 graduate of the Post Baccalaureate PharmD program, has been appointed chair of FIP Education (FIPEd) and will help lead and coordinate activities related to pharmacy, pharmaceutical sciences education and workforce development. His past FIP service also includes serving as president of the FIP Academic Pharmacy Section in 2017 and he is also an FIP fellow.
As chair, Pieper will guide FIPEd strategic goals including providing a global platform for exchange, mentoring and learning for all professional leaders, building evidence-based resources for educational development and member support, developing education-related policy supporting the advancement of pharmacy and pharmaceutical science professions, and fostering innovation to advance pharmacy and pharmaceutical sciences education.
