What happens to your UBIT services when you retire or leave your position at UB

Learn what happens to your access to UBmail, software and more.

When you retire

  • To keep your UBmail address after retirement, all you need to do is keep using it: Read, send or delete a message once every 90 days to keep your account active, either through a browser or your favorite app.
  • Your mailbox limit will be reduced to 50GB. You will be unable to send or receive email if you exceed the limit. Please ensure you are below quota prior to retiring.

If you leave UB without retiring

  • If you are not a graduate of UB or a currently enrolled student, you will not have access to UBmail
  • You can no longer download, purchase or use software licensed through UB, including subscription or cloud services (including MS 365)

Common questions

Do retirees keep their access to UBbox or Microsoft 365 OneDrive cloud storage?

No. You must transfer documents that you want to keep from your OneDrive and UBbox space to personal file storage or another owner before you retire. OneDrive even offers a mover tool to transfer your files from your UB account to a personal one.

I am still in my position, but I received an email, "Notice: Your UBIT Services are Changing." What should I do?

  1. Ask an administrative staff member in your department to contact the UBIT Help Center at ubithelp@buffalo.edu to confirm that a new current appointment has been submitted. Current means the start date is today or was back-dated to the past. They can request a short term extension of your UBITName to allow time for the appointment to be processed by HR.
  2. After the UBIT Help Center confirms the details of the request, the short term extension allows your UBITName to access most UBIT services pending the full processing of a new appointment by HR. Some services may not fully work without a fully processed HR appointment.
  3. Once the new appointment is processed by HR, your UBITName can be used to access UBIT services for the length of your appointment.

I had access to UBIT services in the 60 and Over Auditors program, but I received an email, "Notice: Your UBIT Services are Changing." What should I do?

Contact the Office of the Registrar to re-enroll in the 60 and Over Auditors Program. Once enrolled you will be granted access to UBIT services.

If you are not enrolled for the current semester, you will no longer have access to UBIT services or UBmail.
