A story on National Public Radio’s Morning Edition about the lack of “deepfakes” this presidential election quotes David Doermann, director of UB’s Artificial Intelligence Institute.
National candidates are perhaps less likely to be attacked with deepfakes, which are falsified videos produced by artificial intelligence, because they will quickly be debunked, he said. If used at a local level, however, there could be substantial damage, he added.
"The place that we saw these fakes hurt people, initially, was at a very grassroots level. They were using it for revenge on a spouse or a partner. And you know at that level, it can do a lot of damage," Doermann said.
The report was shared on member stations across the country. Read the story here.
