A $7.38 million grant from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) will fund the creation of a new mircrobiome center at the University at Buffalo (UB).

Dr. Keith Kirkwood of the UB School of Dental Medicine is the principal investigator on the grant, which will launch the UB Microbiome Center Gnotobiotic Animal Research Facility on UB's South Campus. The center will enhance and build on the current Microbiome Center, and will enable scientists to conduct research in a germ-free environment.

Dr. Kirkwood, a professor in the Department of Oral Biology, is an affiliate faculty member of the Cell, Gene and Tissue Engineering Center.
