Registration for CLaRI's summer 2024 Reading & Writing Society (camp) is closed. CLaRI will offer fall 2024 Saturday Morning Tutoring. Please check our website around August 19 for fall 2024 tutoring information.
Summer Reading and Writing Society, CLaRI’s on-site and virtual camp, provides literacy instruction for four weeks. Children reading and writing below grade level and entering second grade through fifth grade in fall 2024 are eligible to attend.
The program runs Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., from July 11 to August 2. Each day, children will engage in small-group reading, spelling, writing instruction and have time to independently read and write. Instruction will focus on helping students develop their fluency (word recognition, automaticity, prosody), use of comprehension strategies, vocabulary knowledge, spelling (phonological awareness, phonics, conventional spelling) and writing abilities. Children will have access to read and check out a wide variety of books from the CLaRI library to read during the camp and at home.
Our camp is designed to promote children’s desire to read and write. Instruction will focus on developing students’ reading (fluency and comprehension), phonological awareness, orthographic knowledge, spelling, vocabulary knowledge, and writing abilities. Instruction will be tailored to meet the literacy needs of the students in each small group of 3 to 5 students.
Our camp aims to inspire confidence in students as they have the opportunity to engage in reading and writing over the summer. Students will have the opportunity to stay active in their literacy development this summer, learning and practicing new literacy skills each day of the camp.
Instruction will aim to boost the child's reading and writing abilities. Children attending must be reading and writing below grade level. Examples from home and/or school illustrating the child's current academic needs are required for admission.
University at Buffalo graduate-level literacy students provide reading and writing instruction. All lesson plans are approved and instruction is observed by the UB course instructor. Instruction will occur on-site, at the Center for Literacy and Reading Instruction (CLaRI), and virtually via the web-based platform Zoom.
Each day, children will have 10-15 minutes to have snack. Children will be engaged in challenging reading, spelling, and writing instruction and will need a break and snack to maintain their focus and stamina during the 3-hour literacy camp. Please pack a drink and peanut/tree nut-free snack for your child. If the weather is nice, children will be able to eat outside and take a walk around Baldy Hall. Children will always remain with their teacher.
