Respondus LockDown Browser and Respondus Monitor

Respondus tools are used to deter cheating in non-proctored exams in UB Learns.

On this page:

Students Using Windows 10 and Above

Students using Windows 10 and above must have administrative access to their computers to install, update and use LockDown Browser to take a quiz.

macOS users need administrative access to install and update LockDown Browser only.

Respondus LockDown Browser

LockDown Browser is a custom browser that locks down the testing environment in UB Learns. When you use LockDown Browser to take a test, you are unable to print, copy, go to other websites, access other applications or close a test until it is submitted for grading.

Tests created for use with LockDown Browser cannot be accessed with standard browsers.

Respondus LockDown Browser options in a Brightspace quiz.

You must launch LockDown Browser from the quiz in Brightspace. You cannot open LockDown Browser first and navigate to Brightspace.

Installing the Chromebook Extension

To install the extension to a Chromebook, you will need to use the regular LockDown Browser installation link for UB (Link is in the Resources for Students section on this page.). You will not be able to search for the app directly from the Chrome web store.

The LockDown Browser installation link will direct you to the Chrome web store, at which point you should select Add to Chrome to install the LockDown Browser Extension.

Respondus Monitor

Respondus Monitor is included in the LockDown Browser installation.

You may be required to use LockDown Browser with a webcam, which will record you during an online, non-proctored exam. The webcam feature is referred to as Respondus Monitor.

Resources for Students

The link below, LockDown Browser Installer for Windows and Mac (includes Respondus Monitor), is the only link that you should use to download LockDown Browser. The installers are preconfigured to work with UB Learns.
