UB Fulbright Faculty seminars serve to bring together faculty interested in creating or enhancing an international component of their research, scholarship, or teaching through engagement with the Fulbright program. The seminar series strives to connect and support faculty and their efforts in the international space through collaboration with partners in International Education and interested decanal units.

Fulbright Application Workshop
This workshop will give applicants the opportunity to receive feedback on application materials from UB Fulbright alumni, as well as from the Director of Awards and Recognition, Dr. Maria Almanza and UB Fulbright Faculty Liaison, Dr. Tilman Baumstark. The workshop will be dedicated to one-on-one meetings, followed by group discussion.

Strategies for Preparing a Successful Fulbright U.S. Scholars Application
This webinar is aimed at current and future applicants for the Fulbright U.S. Scholars program. During the workshop, panelists will discuss strategies and best practices for crafting a competitive Fulbright application that aligns with the Fulbright mission. This webinar will provide an in-depth discussion of all required application materials with a specific focus on the project statement, a central element of the Fulbright application. Panelists include UB Fulbright alumni, who have served on U.S. Scholar program peer review committee, the Director of Faculty Recognition, and the UB Fulbright Liaison.

Fulbright Application Writing Workshop
To further support our Fulbright applicants, the Office for Faculty Affairs will be hosting a hands-on Fulbright application workshop. This workshop will give applicants the opportunity to receive feedback on application materials from UB Fulbright alumni, as well as from the Director of Awards and Recognition, Dr. Maria Almanza and the UB Fulbright Faculty Liaison, Dr. Tilman Baumstark. The first half of the workshop will be dedicated to one-on-one meetings, followed by a larger group discussion of best practices for crafting a competitive application.
Developing a Fulbright US Scholar Application
In the second seminar of the 2022 spring semester, vice provost Robert Granfield will honor the most recent recipients of a Fulbright US Scholar Award for the 2021/22 award cycle. A presentation introducing the types of Fulbright Scholar Awards and important details of the application process will be followed by a distinguished faculty panel of former award recipients acting as alumni ambassadors to the Fulbright program. These guest speakers are looking forward to engage with the attending UB faculty to cover and discuss topics related to development of a suitable project, identification of international partnerships, crafting a competitive application, and the planning steps necessary for the eventual time abroad as well as after the award.

Enhancing Research, Scholarship, and Teaching through Fulbright Awards
In the first seminar of the spring semester, learn how UB faculty are integrating their experiences as recipients of prior Fulbright awards from different times in their career into an ongoing focus of their research and academic activities. Members of the Fulbright Association will introduce the regional WNY chapter, a platform to engage with other Fulbright alumns and a resource for those new to the different programs.

Keynote speaker: Diana Aga, PhD
Diana S. Aga, the Henry M. Woodburn Professor of Chemistry and Director of the UB RENEW Institute, is an environmental and analytical chemist researching the environmental impact of industrial and agricultural pollutants, as well as pharmaceuticals and personal care products. Aga’s work is local and global, ranging from studies on the bioaccumulation of pollutants in fish and common terns in the Great Lakes region, to research investigating the presence of pharmaceuticals, personal care products, antibiotics and antibiotics resistance genes in waters in the U.S., Asia and Europe. She has engaged with international institutions, including the World Health Organization, to combat antimicrobial resistance, one of the greatest threats in modern medicine and public health.
