The grade point average (GPA) at UB is a measure of how well students are succeeding.
The GPA at UB is the ratio of the number of grade points earned at UB to the number of graded credits at UB.
The number of grade points earned is the sum of the products of the credit hours associated with courses taken and the numerical equivalents of the grades earned for those courses. Refer to the Undergraduate Catalog or the Graduate School grading overview for more information about grade tables and numerical equivalents of grades.
Graded credits are the total number of credits for which the student has earned a letter grade.
Class | Letter Grade | Grade Points Equivalent | Credit Hours | Grade Points Earned (Grade Points Equivalent x Credit Hours) |
---|---|---|---|---|
English | “A” | 4.000 | 3 | 12.000 |
Physics | “B+” | 3.333 | 4 | 13.332 |
Chemistry | “A-” | 3.667 | 3 | 11.001 |
World History | “C” | 2.000 | 3 | 6.000 |
Finance | “B-” | 2.667 | 3 | 8.001 |
16 total credit hours | 50.334 total grade points earned |
In this example, the student would have a 3.146 GPA (50.334 grade points earned divided by 16 credit hours).
The overall GPA is the combined UB and transfer GPA. The student’s Academic Advisement Report includes the overall GPA. Academic Advisement Reports can be accessed in the HUB Student Center.
A student’s GPA is used in determining academic standards for good standing, financial eligibility, continued enrollment and participation in University activities. The University reviews the academic records of all students on a regular basis.
The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) gives students the ability to inspect their grades and other records, and limits others from accessing that information.
