2023 Summer Research Symposium

The University at Buffalo Collegiate Science & Technology Entry Program (CSTEP) recognizes the importance of mentoring on campus, and for this reason we proudly recognize faculty research mentors who go above and beyond in supporting our students.

The UB CSTEP Outstanding Faculty Research Mentor Award honors faculty members who have impacted CSTEP undergraduate students’ academic and professional careers. Nominated by students, winners of this award also stand apart for their support of CSTEP’s mission to increase the success of talented underrepresented populations in Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics (STEM) and the licensed professions.

Eligibility & Nomination Criteria

Nominees must be current UB faculty members who have provided research mentoring to CSTEP students. During the nomination process, students will be asked to answer questions about how their faculty research mentor impacted them in the following areas:

  • Provides mentorship, support, and guidance to a past and current CSTEP research mentee.
  • Serves as a positive role model for the mentee.
  • Supportive/encouraging.
  • Enthusiastic/engaging with the mentee.
  • Provides and advocates for ongoing training in research.
  • Provides career development and graduate school advisement for the mentee.
  • Mentor is approachable, understanding and genuinely interested in the well-being (academic and otherwise) of the mentee (student).

While the above criteria provide a guideline, students are encouraged to include any additional information regarding their nominee that may help during the selection process.

Selection

Outstanding Faculty Research Mentor Award recipients are chosen by the CSTEP Advisory Board.

This honor is awarded every five years at the CSTEP anniversary gala. The UB CSTEP Outstanding Faculty Research Mentor will also be included in the commemorative journal and highlighted on the UB CSTEP website.
