My mentor supplied me with an ethically admirable model for how to conduct myself professionally when relating to mentees. My goal would be to do the same for others: to show them the virtues of supporting the research of those who I am in position to guide. The specific quality I prize most highly in this regard is the ability to listen and respond to student aspirations rather than seek to determine these in accordance with my own convictions or biases.
