Grading in the Grade Book

Learn how to grade assignments directly within the grade book in UB Learns.

Beginning the Grading Process

Grading of assignments can also be done from within the grade book. 

  1. Open the Grades tool from the Course Navbar or from the Course Admin tool.
  2. In the Enter Grades area of the page, click on Switch to Spreadsheet View.
  3. Navigate to the column for the assignment to be graded.
    • Click on the down arrow next to the assignment or quiz name.
    • Select Enter Grades.
    • An icon will appear in the Submission column for those who have submitted.
    • Click on the icon to open the grading page.
    • The assignment will appear on the left side of the screen.
    • If a rubric is being used to score the assignment, it will appear in the upper right corner of the screen.
    • If a rubric is not being used, the score can be entered into the box for overall grade, also on the right.
    • In addition, there is an editing window where written feedback can be entered.
    • Once the grade is assigned, and feedback is entered, the instructor can click publish to immediately publish feedback to the student or save draft to allow for publishing all grades at the same time.
    • In the very top right corner, there is a toggle for users.  This toggle can be used to move to the next submission.
    • If the save draft option has been selected for each graded submission, once all submissions have been graded, click on Back to User Submissions in the upper left corner.
      • The Publish Feedback button will now be available – select all students and click this to publish scores and feedback for all submissions.
    • Students will not see their grades and feedback until these have been published.

Override Quiz Scores in the Grade Book

Instructors can override quiz scores and provide additional feedback to students about the quiz from the grade book.

  1. Open the Grades tool from the Course Navbar or from the Course Admin tool.
  2. In the Enter Grades area of the page, click on Switch to Spreadsheet View.
  3. Navigate to the column for the quiz.
    • Click on the down arrow next to the assignment or quiz name.
    • Select Enter Grades.
    • An icon will appear in the Submission column for those who have submitted a quiz attempt.
    • Type in the text box in theGrade column to override the score.
    • Feedback can be provided to the student in two ways:
      1.  Click on the icon in the submission column to open the Feedback page.
        •  Scroll down to the text editor to add comments and then click Save.
        • In addition, the instructor can attach a file to this feedback and/or record an audio or video message to the student.
      2. Click on the pencil icon in the Feedback column.
        • Type the feedback in the text editor.
        • Private comments, available only to instructors in the course, can be entered in the Private Comments text box.
        • Click on the Save button to save the feedback/comments.
    • Students will see this feedback in theComments and Assessments column of the Grade Book.                    

Grading Multiple Assignments for Individual Students

There may be times when there are multiple assignments to be graded for individual students.

  1. Open the Grades tool from the Course Navbar or from the Course Admin tool.
  2. Grades can be entered for each student by clicking on student name
  3. The page that opens will have all assignments listed. 
    • For assignments with submissions, the file will be attached.
    • If there is a rubric associated with the assignment, the rubric will also appear.
    • If there is no rubric, the text box for the grade allows for manual entry.
    • There is also an editing window for overall comments.
    • Once the relevant assignments have been graded, click on Save and Close.

Exporting Grades

  1. On the navbar, click Grades.
  2. Click Export.
  3. Under Key Field, click Both.
  4. Under Grade Values, click Grade Scheme.
  5. Under User Details, click Last Name and First Name.
  6. If your course is cross-listed or combined, click Section Membership.
  7. Click Export to CSV or Export to Excel.
  8. When UB Learns has finished creating the file, click Download.
