UB Guardian is powered by the "Rave Guardian" app from Rave Mobile Safety. Rave Mobile Safety provides a suite of software applications for safety, including the applications that power both UB Alert and UB Guardian. The name "UB Guardian" denotes the university's branding of the Rave Guardian app.

No. However, you must first register for UB Alert before installing the UB Guardian app. The UB Guardian app provides UB Alert push notifications to have redundancy of receiving emergency messages. We encourage all faculty, staff and students who have not already done so to register for UB Alert text and email messages.
Registration and use of this service is free to all current UB students, faculty and staff. Cellular phone service fees are incurred and paid for directly by each cell phone customer at their discretion.
Your email address and cellphone number will not be provided to organizations outside of UB other than ermergency responders.
UB Guardian is a service supported by Rave Mobile Safety. Rave is a private company based out of Massachusetts that has been a leading provider of software safety solutions for years. The UB Alert email and SMS text message notification system has been powered by their technology for over a decade.
Yes, the UB Guardian app provides push notifications to have redundancy of receiving emergency messages. Yes. We recommend that you allow notifications from UB Guardian. This will alert you when your timer is about to expire, when you have received a response from UB Police or when someone has requested you as a guardian.
No. Text messages and emergency calls placed through UB Guardian are not anonymous; University Police dispatchers will be able to see your name and cell phone number. If you want to submit a tip anonymously, UB Guardian includes a link to the University Police silent witness site. All submissions through silent witness are anonymous unless you choose to provide contact information.
You can provide as much information for your profileas you like during the registration process. This information is then shared with UB Police if you make an emergency call or send a tip, and it is shared with your chosen Guardian if your timer runs out before you turn it off.
To maximize the full benefit of this service, your user profile should contain a current photo, an accurate self-description and your home and school addresses. We also encourage you to share any special health issues (such as serious allergies) or personal safety concerns. The more information you provide in your profile, the easier it will be for officers to locate and identify you quickly.
Yes. Rave Mobile Safety (the provider of UB Guardian) uses the latest in security technologies and processes to ensure that all of your information is kept secure and private. Rave also undergoes regular security audits to ensure the data is secure.
No. When setting up a timer, you must choose a valid cell phone number (including area code) from your phone contacts list that can receive SMS text messages. If you specify an invalid contact phone number, the Guardian app will not warn you of the error.
You will not receive a notification that your guardian is actively monitoring the session. However, if a guardian is actively monitoring, you will see "At least 1 Guardian watching this session" in the upper right corner of the Safety Timer map.
Yes. The Eyewitness Tip feature works whether you are on or off campus; however, if you have an emergency at an off-campus location, you should dial 9-1-1. If you send a tip that is not on campus, the information will be forwarded to the applicable off-campus law enforcement agency.
Absolutely. When on campus, you can contact UB Police by calling 716-645-2222, using any blue light phone or visiting their office in Bissell Hall. When you are off campus, you will want to use 9-1-1.
The basic profile features of UB Guardian work on any iPhone or Android smartphone running on any U.S.-based mobile carrier network including AT&T, Sprint and Verizon. Even if UB Guardian cannot determine your phone’s location, all other profile information will be made available to UB Police when you use UB Guardian.
To change your cellphone number, log into your UB Guardian account and update your profile with your new number. You will not be asked to create a new profile. However, this is the perfect time to review your existing information and confirm that the remainder of the information is up to date.
UB Guardian makes your profile information and location (if you have enabled the location service) available to University Police if you make an emergency call or send a tip. However, it cannot be used to locate you without your knowledge. If you select someone as a guardian for a safety timer, your profile information and location are also made available only if your safety timer session expires.
No. Your privacy is of the utmost importance. You can only be located if you have asked for help. UB Guardian location information is only enabled when you choose to make an emergency call, send a tip or when your safety timer expires.
No. University Police will only be able to obtain your information if you have asked them for help. UB Guardian location information is only activated when you choose to activate it on your smartphone
Factors include but are not limited to: whether you are calling from inside a building or a ‘dead spot'; proximity of cell towers or satellites; whether your phone is GPS enabled; and the type and quality of your phone, carrier and signal. When setting the UB Guardian safety timer, if possible, you should provide detailed location information via text or voice. This will enable UB Police personnel to reach you quickly when UB Guardian is activated.
No. When your timer expires your guardians will be prompted to check on your well-being. If they cannot reach you they can choose to notify University Police. You will also get a notification that your timer is expiring and can choose to contact your guardians or University Police.
No. Your cell phone will receive only one text message and one email that provides you with a confirmation number indicating that your cellphone and University at Buffalo email have been registered. No other messages will be sent to your phone from UB Guardian. However, during an emergency, you may receive UB Alert texts and emails if you have registered for that additional service.
No. Your UB Guardian account remains active as long as you are an active UB student, faculty or staff.
