At UB, we recognize that student clubs and organizations are an invaluable part of the university community.
If you manage a social media account for a student group at UB, here’s what you need to know:
Social media accounts created or managed by student clubs and organizations at UB are not considered official UB accounts.
Student groups are responsible for what they post on social media and the views and opinions expressed on their associated social media accounts do not represent the official positions of the University at Buffalo.
Be sure to abide by University policies, as well as community guidelines for the social media platform in which the account is operating.
Consult with your group’s recognizing agent for additional guidance and/or requirements related to operating social media accounts.
As noted above, student groups are not considered official UB accounts. This means the use of UB trademarks is prohibited on student clubs’ associated social media accounts as well as in content published by those accounts.
Follow the brand guidelines below to ensure your accounts are in compliance:
If you are a new club, be sure to review the Student Group Naming Guidelines to identify the organization appropriately before creating any social media accounts.
Student groups are not permitted to use UB trademarks, including the interlocking UB, in profile icons. Instead, consider creating your own logo or using a photograph that depicts your group’s function or purpose.
If you decide to create your own logo for your organization, be sure to follow the guidance detailed on the Student Group Logo page. Please be aware that the spirit mark template is not permitted for use in social media profile icons.
The approved Student Group Logo, as shown on this page, is the only permissible way to leverage a UB trademark (the Spirit Mark template) in your cover photo. Review the usage guidance for details and download the template here.
Student groups are only permitted to use ‘UB’ in their social media usernames (@ handles) and profile names to refer to the university. The use of ‘University at Buffalo’ and/or ‘UBuffalo’ is prohibited.
Follow the Student Group Naming guidance to develop an appropriate name for your organization that can be incorporated into your social media accounts, as demonstrated in the examples below:
Correct Profile Name | Incorrect Profile Name |
UB Student Club | UBuffalo Student Club |
Student Club at UB | University at Buffalo Student Club |
Correct Username | Incorrect Username |
@ubstudentclub | @ubuffalostudentclub |
Student groups can use ‘University at Buffalo’ or ‘UBuffalo’ in the account’s about section or bio to note location of the organization and/or identify as part of the university community.
As you create content, consider utilizing UB’s hashtags to reach the full UB community, especially those that may not yet be following you.
UB’s favorite mascot has been emojified and is now an official registered trademark. A full suite of Little Victor graphics is available for use by recognized student group pages to create branded social media content.
For campus-wide updates and news, follow UB’s institutional accounts to stay connected. Be on the lookout for opportunities to get your student club or organization involved, especially on Instagram.
