Joyce Hwang

Department of Architecture

Joyce Hwang, FAIA, is a professor and director of graduate studies in the Department of Architecture and the founder of Ants of the Prairie, an office of architectural practice and research that confronts contemporary ecological conditions through creative means. Hwang is internationally recognized for her projects that incorporate wildlife habitats into constructed environments. She has received numerous fellowships, and her work has been exhibited at Matadero Madrid, the Venice Architecture Biennale, and the Rotterdam International Architecture Biennale, among other venues. The Museum of Modern Art recently featured Hwang’s work as part of its Built Ecologies video series. In 2024, Hwang was appointed to the American Institute of Architects’ prestigious College of Fellows—the organization’s highest membership honor.

Edward Steinfeld

Department of Architecture

Edward Steinfeld, ArchD, SUNY Distinguished Professor of architecture, is a trailblazer in the field of inclusive design since the 1970s when he led a transformational research project that established the first evidence base for accessibility standards. Believing inclusive design is critical for achieving a socially sustainable community, Steinfeld founded the Inclusive Design and Environmental Access (IDEA) Center at UB in 1984. He has received a Distinguished Professor Award from the Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture, Applied Research Award from Progressive Architecture, Research Recognition Award from the National Endowment for the Arts, and the James Haecker Award for distinguished leadership from the Architectural Research Centers Consortium. In 2024, Steinfeld was elevated to the American Institute of Architects’ prestigious College of Fellows.
