CII was asked to suggest a book and give a presentation for UB's Alumni Loyal Blues Book Club on a topic related to Artificial Intelligence.
Compelling and digestible, Weapons of Math Destruction by Cathy O’Neil was first released in 2016 and it remains an important book for understanding the societal impact of algorithms. So many of the decisions that effect our lives are no longer being made by humans, but mathematical models. While it might seem that would help to eliminate bias, the opposite is often true to devastating effect. And while this book shares some of the very serious pitfalls and negative effects of big data – there is still an entire world of opportunity represented by AI.
CII Co-Director David Castillo and CII Members Bruce Pitman and Jasmina Tacheva participated in a panel discussion on the hidden bias in our AI assisted world.
