Acker Scholar Requirements

How Acker Scholars make a positive impact through service and leadership.

Leadership and holistic development are integral parts of being an Acker Scholar. Acker Scholars are expected to serve, positively impact and become leaders within the UB community. All Acker Scholars will participate in community service, workshops and experiential learning during their time at UB. Here are the requirements, broken down by academic year.

By the end of your freshman year:

1)      Tutoring, Academic Coaching, Success Coaching, and/or Professor/TA Office Hours:

a.       4 PER SEMESTER

a.      You have the choice to attend either Tutoring Sessions, Academic Coaching Sessions, Success Coaching Sessions, and/or Professor/TA Office Hours

b.      Success Coaching can be scheduled using the guidelines they shared with you

2)       Acker Healing Justice or Tough Topic Conversations:

a.      1 PER SEMESTER

a.      You have the choice to attend either an Acker Healing Justice Session and/or Tough Topics conversation through the UB Intercultural & Diversity Center:

b.      Acker Healing Justice Session notifications will be sent out via UB email

3)      Health & Wellness Session or Event:

a.      1 PER SEMESTER

b.     Please attend one programs or workshop held by the Health Promotions Office here at UB

b.      You are also welcome to attend any health or wellness-related program or event offered on campus related to meditation, yoga, breathing exercises, mindfulness, etc.

By the end of your sophomore year:

By the end of your junior year:

  • Complete two experiential learning activities:
    • Undergraduate research or creative activity. (e.g., McNair, ELN, CSTEP, LSAMP, REU).
    • Departmental independent study.
    • Shared Interest Housing leader.
    • Internship or practicum.
    • Study abroad.
    • Undergraduate supervised teaching (TA).
    • Graduate coursework, departmental Honors coursework, thesis or project.
    • Torch Leadership certificate program.
    • Diversity Advocate, Wellness Peer Educator or Tutor for ARC or academic departments.
    • Join the e-board of a Student Association club or organization.
    • Resident assistant.
