UB has convened a team of faculty and staff to examine policies and practices that will support the full inclusion of our transgender community.
The team is composed of subgroups examining the following issues:
This subgroup is examining UB's record and data systems to enable the use of students' and employees' chosen names. This will impact class rosters, directory listings, UBIT names and other on-campus communications where a legal change of name is not required.
The Physical Facilities subgroup will be ensuring that housing, restrooms, changing areas and other spaces are inclusive. This includes gender-inclusive options as well as protecting an individual's choice to use facilities consistent with their gender identity.
The Student Services and Resources subgroup is examining best practices to ensure that UB provides transgender students with support, assistance, and an inclusive learning environment.
The Employee Services and Resources group is examining practices that will support employees who are transitioning, and that will promote an inclusive and supportive work environment.
New York State laws, regulations, and policies impact our ability to provide seamless inclusion for our transgender community. The External Communications, Education and Advocacy subgroup is planning strategies to ensure that our legislators and other elected representatives understand the importance of transgender inclusion to UB.
The Campus Education and Campus Climate group is examining the information and outreach to students, faculty, staff and other members of the UB community to raise awareness of practices that promote transgender inclusion, to assess areas where there may be difficulties, and to plan strategies to improve our campus climate.
If you have experiences, suggestions or any information that would be helpful to our committee as we move forward, we would love to hear from you! Please take a moment to write to us or to call us at (716) 645-2266.
