Cisco Jabber allows you to chat from multiple devices at the same time, from desktop and mobile.
Operating System: Windows, Macintosh
Applies to: UB faculty and staff
Last Updated: November 27, 2019
Multiple device messaging allows you to receive a copy of your 1:1 chats from any client that is signed in or receiving updates, such as an iOS device with push notifications. These chats are not stored centrally, and do not synchronize between devices. Certain features, such as group chat invitations and files, are sent only to the device which was most recently active that you've sent messages from.
If you are offline (signed off from Jabber on all devices, or all devices are shut down), the system will store up to 99 messages, available to you the next time you sign in.
1:1 chats and group chats are between you and the others in the conversation. While your messages travel through central services, they do so securely and are not retained centrally, with the exception of offline messages. You or others in your conversation may choose to log or archive chat messages for convenience. No notification is sent when a party is logging chat messages.
Rooms (Persistent Chat Rooms) are stored centrally with 30 days of history, allowing you to catch up on the conversation from any device. (Official business records should be copied to appropriate data storage locations before records are automatically expunged.
