Gender Identity, Pronouns & Legal Sex

Learn how to update a student’s gender identity, pronouns and legal sex, and how this information is used at UB.

Gender Identity

Students can update their gender identity to reflect correctly in the system. Gender identity is confidential and is only displayed to a limited number of users.

Pronouns

Everyone has the right to be addressed and referred to by the chosen name and pronouns that correspond to their gender identity, including the use of non-binary pronouns (e.g., they/them). The university will use preferred pronouns when possible.

Update in HUB

Students can enter their pronouns into HUB and have those pronouns displayed in the system.

Where Pronouns Appear

Pronouns will appear in:

  • HUB Student Center
  • HUB Faculty Center
  • HUB Admin Access
  • Slate (Admissions system)
  • Class rosters
  • Navigate (Advising System)

Legal Sex

The University at Buffalo (UB) strives to identify individuals as they identify themselves. Students may elect male, female, X or another legal sex.

Update Legal Sex

To update legal sex, contact the Office of the Registrar. Requests received by the Office of the Registrar to change a legal sex do not require any medical or legal documentation.

About Legal Sex

Confidential

Legal sex is confidential, shown only to administrative users when necessary for university business and does not appear on class rosters.

Reporting Requirements

By law, UB must report required student data to the federal government in accordance with its data requirements. In certain circumstances, the federal government requires the University to query and report legal sex in a binary male or female format. Accordingly, a student who has selected X or another legal sex may be required to choose a male or female category solely for the purposes of federal reporting. We recognize that this is not inclusive. This process will be updated once federal reporting standards are updated.

Honorifics

Honorifics, also commonly known as salutations, are titles that convey esteem or respect. Common honorifics are “Dr.,” “Mr.,” “Mrs.,” “Ms.,” and “Mx.”. To update honorifics, requests should be sent to the Office of the Registrar.
